S.O.S. School Of Self-defence
"Do not strike others, and do not let others strike you. The goal is peace without incident." Chojun Miyagi
We are a family-led Martial Arts School and have lived on the Black Isle since 2004. Our children went to primary and secondary schools here. We wanted S.O.S. School Of Self-defence to be available to all on the Black Isle and surrounding areas with the classes to be accessible in various locations as we understand that it is not always easy to get around. We have the good fortune to live in a beautiful area that is filled with wonderful people and wanted to share the skills and benefits that Martial Arts can bring, particularly to younger family members.
My name is Sensei Shaun Bell-Higgs (3rd Dan Black Belt) and I am one of the main Instructors at S.O.S. School Of Self-defence. The other main Instructor is Renshi Anna Bell-Higgs (4th Dan Black belt). We were also initially assisted by Sempai Archie Bell-Higgs (1st Dan Black Belt) until he headed off for College. As you can see, we ARE a family-led Martial Arts School! We have a strong family-centred approach to Martial Arts and we all started our Martial Arts journey together as a family, along with our daughter, and have all benefited from the skills, ethos and approach to Life that Martial Arts can provide.
We will also be assisted in classes at times by other instructors as our SOS Team. All these instructors are also SKA trained so you can be certain of and guaranteed by the quality and level of the teaching and instruction.
We believe strongly and passionately in self-defence and protection. No-one has the right to lay harm or threaten harm to another person. You do not have the right to do that and no-one has the right to do that to you. But you do have the right to defend and protect yourself should you be placed in such a position by another.
We've been involved with the life-protection Martial Art of Kempo since 2005 and been in teaching and instructing since 2010 at schools in Inverness and Dingwall. We have S.O.S. School Of Self-Defence dojos at Avoch, Culbokie, Kiltarlity, Muir of Ord, Fortrose, Conon Bridge and North Kessock. Our S.O.S. School of Self-Defence is affiliated to the Scottish Kempo Academy with SKA Kempo classes located at Inverness, Dingwall, Tain, Strathpeffer, Bonar Bridge and Alness.
Our Yoshin Kempo system is based on the traditional old-school Japanese Martial Art of Kempo which translated means 'Willow Heart Fist Law.' Kempo incorporates kicks, throws, blocks, strikes and locks and is purely a Self-Defence system with no sporting elements. Our students learn highly effective self-protection skills in a friendly and family-orientated training environment where you will make new friends very quickly.
From the very first Kempo lesson, students learn how relatively easy it is to learn the art. Since the movements are natural, students begin to formulate effective Self-Defence techniques immediately.
Our exciting and inspirational classes blend the greatness of the Eastern traditions of Martial Arts training with the latest, more upbeat, Western Martial Arts teaching methods combined with Eastern discipline for a fresh and inspiring approach to teaching Martial Arts around the Highlands of Scotland.
All of our instructors are dedicated Martial Artists, trained to the highest level who inspire students towards the goal of Black Belt and beyond. We are committed to Highland Council's Child Protection Policy and all our instructors are Disclosure Scotland PVG checked. Numerous instructors are qualified Emergency First Aiders and all members are fully insured. We have training mats at all locations for added safety.
We are proudly affiliated with a number of quality Martial Arts organisations...

Through our affiliation with the SKA, we have the great fortune to benefit from the heritage and lineage that is important to the ethos of Martial Arts. It maintains the ideals of respect and discipline of Those who stood before and is testament to the longevity of their teachings that we can can continue this whilst looking to the Past and also to the Future. It may not make a better Martial Artist but it can help make a better person and be an inspiration and a guide for Life choices.
We also have the honour and privilege of knowing and being taught by the 2 following greats of Kempo and Martial Arts, through their affiliation with and as Technical Advisers to the SKA, the quality American Martial Artists:
